Mayor Villaraigosa Signs Business Tax Elimination for New Car Dealerships

On Monday, July 9th, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa signed into law a new ordinance exempting new car sales from the City's Gross Receipts Tax (commonly called the "Business Tax"). Over the past 25 years Los Angeles has lost 95 car dealerships--many of them moving to neighboring cities with lower or no business tax. This new ordinance puts LA on the right path to bringing back car dealerships and growing Sales Tax revenue for the City.

Bridges to Business Success Program Kickoff

Mayor Villaraigosa celebrates Lucky Brand moving to Los Angeles. The new headquarters brings approximately 250 jobs to Los Angeles’ growing and vibrant Downtown Arts District. This facility will house Lucky Brand’s executive offices, finance, product and store design, production, merchandizing, creative services, marketing, and public relations units.

Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Visits Los Angeles

On February 16-17 2012, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa hosted a delegation led by Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping. The delegation met with government and business leaders in Los Angeles as part of a five-day tour of the United States. Mayor Villaraigosa and Vice President. Xi focused on increasing trade with China and creating jobs in Los Angeles, including a forum on fostering economic opportunities.

LA Cleantech Incubator Opening

The LA CleanTech Incubator accelerates the development of cleantech start-ups by offering flexible office space, CEO coaching and mentoring, and access to a growing network of experts and capital. The incubator is located in the CleanTech Corridor, a four mile long strip between the Los Angeles River and Alameda in the eastern part of downtown, which is the cornerstone of the City’s green economic strategy.

Eliminating Business Tax for Auto Dealers

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced that Beverly Hills Porsche is moving to Los Angeles next year, becoming only the second dealer in 25 years to open in the City. To attract and retain more businesses that generate jobs and large amounts of sales tax, Mayor Villaraigosa stood with Councilmember Mitch Englander and Council President Eric Garcetti and called for exempting auto dealers from the City’s business tax.

BYD Grand Opening

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa joined Mayor Xu Qin of China’s Shenzhen Province and Councilmember Jan Perry for the grand opening of BYD’s North American headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. BYD, which stands for “Build Your Dreams,” is a multi-national manufacturer of electric and hybrid or dual-mode vehicles, solar power systems, environmentally friendly rechargeable batteries, and energy efficient LED lighting.

2nd Annual Fashion's Night Out

Mayor Villaraigosa, along with fashion industry leaders, toured the Beverly Center after announcing the 2nd year of Fashion’s Night Out, a program to help spur consumer spending and generate revenue for LA. It will take place Sep. 8 (6pm-10pm). Over 200 retailers will offer fashion shows, creative giveaways and sales.

Mission Foods Opens New Facility in San Fernando Valley

On September 28th, First Deputy Mayor Austin Beutner joined Gruma Corporation in celebrating the opening of a new Mission Foods manufacturing facility in the San Fernando Valley. OEBP worked with the City and State to expand the Los Angeles State Enterprise Zone in the Valley, giving Gruma Corp. a valuable incentive to locate their plant in Los Angeles. The new facility represents an investment of $50 million, and will create over 400 jobs in an area hardest-hit by the recession.
